* The opening of the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 hosted by South Africa and first time first ever ICC World Twenty20 International match played between West Indies and South Africa.

Herschelle Gibbs' 55-ball 90* and Justin Kemp's assault helped to South Africa record eight-wicket victory over West Indies, despite a Chris Gayle's historic century in a high-scoring clash of the opening match of the inaugural World Twenty20.

  • 413 : This was the highest aggregates match in T20 internationals cricket history, previous record was 401 between England and West Indies at The Oval in 2007.
  • South Africa's 208 was their highest score ever in T20 international, previous highest was 201 against Australia at same venue in 2006 and the joint fourth highest total in T20Is.
  • South Africa chased 208 was their highest successful run-chase in T20 international cricket history, surpassing the previous highest chase was 170 by England against West Indies at The Oval in this year.
  • West Indies's 205 was their second highest score in T20 internationals.

  • 145 : Chris Gayle and Devon Smith set up the record first-wicket partnership in T20 international, It is the highest opening stand in T20I cricket history and also the highest any-wicket stand in T20I cricket history, surpassing the previous record held by the unbeaten 132-run stand between Loots Bosman and Graeme Smith against Pakistan at Johannesburg in this year.
  • 54 : Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs set up the third highest first-wicket partnership for South Africa in T20 internationals.
  • 120* : Herschelle Gibbs and Justin Kemp set up the record third-wicket partnership for South Africa in T20 international, It is the highest third-wicket partnership in T20I cricket history and the third highest any-wicket stand in T20Is.

West Indies scored massive total of 205-6 in 20 overs with top scorer by Chris Gayle 117 - who scored the first ever century in T20I cricket history.

Devon Smith struck 35 off 34-balls including 3-fours, Ramnaresh Sarwan scored 12 and Shivnarine Chanderpaul 11.

South Africa best bowler by Johan van der wath takes 2-wickets, debutant Vernon Philander who took two-wickets on his debut T20I match, debutant Morne Morkel took one-wicket on his debut T20I match and one for Shaun Pollock.

South Africa chased 208-2 in 17.4 overs with top scorer by Herschelle Gibbs hammered a unbeaten 55-ball 90-runs including 14-fours and two-sixes with strike rate of 163.63.

Justin Kemp cracked a unbeaten 22-ball 46-runs including 5-fours and 2-sixes with strike rate of 209.09, Graeme Smith scored 28 off 21-balls included 4-fours & a six and AB de Villiers 16.

West Indies best bowler by Debutant Fidel Edwards - who took one-wicket on his debut T20I match and one for Ravi Rampaul.

Chris Gayle named Player of the match for record-breaking power-hitting batting performance to smashed a career-best 117-runs knocked off facing 57-balls including 10-sixes and 7-fours with strike rate of 205.26.
