THE late arrival of the team's kit and then heavy rain reduced the one-day cricket international between India and Australia to a shambles in Jamshedpur today and the game was abandoned.
The kit was dispatched by lorry in the early hours of the morning after Australian officials discovered no arrangement had been made to transport it the 125 miles from Calcutta to Jamshedpur.
The lorry, two hours after the match was due to start, was found nearly 40 miles from its destination.
Another two hours later play did start, the match having been scaled down from 50 to 24 overs a side. But the weather then intervened and play was abandoned with India 21 for two from 5.1
overs.
Many frustrations
The mix-up over the kit continued a sucession of frustrations suffered by the Australians. On Tuesday they arrived three hours late in Calcutta, were not met at the airport and discovered their hotel had been switched at the last moment.
When their kit did not arrive on time, the players of both teams practised on the outfield wearing shorts and baseball gloves. The crowd became restless and threw stones at the Indian dressing room, breaking several windows. and at officials who announced the delay had been caused by bad weather.
After the match, the local cricket association president, J. J. Irani, said: "How can a country which cannot transport the luggage of cricketers from one town to another stage the World Cup ? " - a reference to the tournament which India will host with Pakistan in 1987.
The Australian manager, Bob Merriman, said his players had repeatedly run into difficulties on the tour.
