Malcolm Marshall and Debutant Roger Harper's combined 5-wickets before Openers Desmond Haynes' unbeaten half-century and Gordon Greenidge' 44 helped to West Indies win by 28 runs against world champions India on a faster scoring rate and take a 1-0 lead in a one-sided game of the first ODI.
* Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium, Srinagar became the 9th Indian venue to host a One-day international match and the 52nd venue in the world to host a ODI match.
* In this match marred by unruly spectators, the West Indies won the first one-day international against world champions India and take a world cup final revenge at Srinagar on a faster scoring rate - scores were compared after 22 overs at which point India had scored 80 runs on the scoreboard.
* Clive Lloyd the West Indies captain won the toss and decided the home side in to the bat. The misty atmosphere and the fast wicket helped seamers Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall and Eldine Baptiste to bundled out the Indians for 176 in 41.1 overs.
* The West Indies had hit 108 without loss a wicket when poor light stopped the match after 22.4 overs. Desmond Haynes, who scored 55, was adjudged the " man of the match."
* The Indian players were continuously abused and pelted with stones, apples and bananas by hundreds of spectators and at one stage Kapil Dev, the Indian captain considered returning to the pavilion with his team.
India scored 176 for all-out in 41.2 overs with top scorer by Kris Srikkanth struck 40 off 91-balls.
Dilip Vengsarkar scored 28 off 39-balls including 3-fours, Kirti Azad hit 21 off 23-balls included 2-sixes & a four and Kapil Dev 17.
West Indies best bowler by Debutant Roger Harper picked up 3-wickets for 34-runs in 9-overs including a maiden on his debut ODI match.
Malcolm Marshall took 2-wickets for 13-runs in 7.2-overs including two maidens with economy rate of 1.77, Eldine Baptiste - who took 2-wickets on his debut ODI match, Andy Roberts and Michael Holding both took one-wickets.
West Indies scored 108 for without lost a wicket in 22.4 overs with top scorer by Desmond Haynes hit a unbeaten 55 off 88-balls and Gordon Greenidge cracked a unbeaten 44 off 58-balls.
