PAKISTAN, exploiting a moist pitch assisting speed and spin, routed Sri Lanka for 145 and romped to an emphatic eight-wicket win in their opening one-day cricket international in Peshawar.
An unbeaten 72 by opener Shoaib Mohammad, son of former Pakistan captain Hanif Mohammad, sealed success at 147-2 with 7.1 of their 40 overs to spare in the first of four one-day matches.
The victory was set up by effective performances from Pakistan's four pacemen and leg spinner Abdul Qadir after captain Javed Miandad won the toss and put the touring team in to bat.
The move was immediately rewarded as Sri Lanka slumped to 11-2 when Aravinda De Silva was caught behind by Ashraf Ali off Imran and Ranjan Madugalle was bowled by Zahir Khan, both failing to score.
Vice-captain Roy Dias went for five, bowled by Mudassar Nazar's medium pace, while Amal Silva was also bowled, by fast medium Tahir Naqqash, for 25 to make the score 50-4.
The introduction of Qadir continued Sri Lanka's decline when he snapped up their fifth wicket with the total at 66 by having Arjuna Ranatunga leg before for 11.
Openers Mudassar and Shoaib scored freely against Sri Lanka's attack in an opening partnership of 113 which was broken when paceman De Mel trapped Mudassar lbw for 40.
