Sri Lanka qualified automatically for the semi-finals by virtue of winning the 1986 Asia Cup. Despite losing their first-round match, New Zealand qualified for the semi-finals as the first-round loser with the lesser margin of defeat.
The 1986 Austral-Asia Cup was held in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, between 10th April to 18th April, 1986. Five national teams took part: Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Pakistan and India.
Pakistan won the tournament, they beating India in the final by a one-wicket in the last-ball of the match, and won the biggest prize reward of US $40,000.
