* India finished the one-day international series by 4-1 ahead against Sri Lanka after winning the last match by thrilling 10 runs in a nail-biting high-scoring finish in Bombay.
* After India hitting 299-4, which was their best total in a one-day international cricket game India appeared to have placed the Sri Lankans in a tight corner.
* But the Sri Lanka devastated the Indian attack and at one stage seeemed headed for victory, requiring 34 runs from 18 balls. However, the seventh wicket pair of Rumesh Ratnayake and Ravi Ratnayeke failed to take their side to victory after Roshan Mahanama fell for career-best fighting 98 off 91-balls contained 7-fours - which he earned man-of-the-match award, and they were 289-7 at the close.
India scored record total of 299-4 in the alloted 40 overs with top scorer by Mohammad Azharuddin hit a career-best unbeaten 108 off 94-balls - which was his 1st ODI hundred - including 8-fours with strike rate of 114.89.
Dilip Vengsarkar struck 52 off 49-balls including 3-fours & a six, Kris Srikkanth hammered a 46 off 27-balls included 8-fours with strike rate of 170.37.
Raman Lamba cracked a 39 off 37-balls including 4-fours & a six and Sunil Gavaskar scored 25 off 35-balls included 3-fours.
Sri Lanka best bowler by Arjuna Ranatunga took 2-wickets and one for Ravi Ratnayeke - Graeme Labrooy.
Sri Lanka scored 289-7 in 40 overs with top scorer by Roshan Mahanama hit a career-best 98 off 91-balls - who fell two-run short of his century - including 7-fours.
Asanka Gurusinha hammered a 52 off 34-balls including 5-fours & 2-sixes with strike rate of 152.94, Duleep Mendis scored 30 off 28-balls included 3-fours, Arjuna Ranatunga 29, Rumesh Ratnayake 28 not out and Roy Dias 15.
India best bowler by Raju Kulkarni strikes 2-wickets, Shivlal Yadav, Madan Lal and Kapil Dev each took one-wickets.
