A superb 78 by skipper Martin Crowe lifted New Zealand to a crucial victory over England in the one-day cricket international at the Brisbane Cricket Ground.
New Zealand kept its World Series chances alive by restricting England to 6-203 from its 50 overs and replying with 2-204 with 33 balls to spare.
While the Kiwis were well-drilled England was ordinary in a match Crowe's men had to win.
The New Zealanders now have two wins from seven matches and England two from five matches while Australia is certain of a place in the finals with four straight wins.
Crowe, named man of the match, was in fine touch again and his 78 included eight fours as he and opening partner John Wright attacked England's poor bowling.
The pair racked up 109 for the first wicket, New Zealand's best partnership score in one day cricket at the Gabba. The previous best was 67 made in 1988 against India.
Wright fell to spinner Phil Tufnell, for 54, his aggressive half century including seven boundaries.
Crowe was out to a smart catch by opposing skipper Graham Gooch from Devon Malcolm's bowling.
But the England attack struggled against determined New Zealanders and at one stage Malcom had 35 runs taken from three overs.
Andrew Jones was a competent replacement after Wright went and he remained not out 41 although he survived a chance to Gooch on 11.
However the day was not a complete disaster for England because Gooch, in his second match back from injury, showed glimpses of his best form.
He hit 48 before falling to a rash stroke against medium pacer Chris Harris and looked certain to play against Australia when England backs up at the Gabba again tomorrow.
The main support for Gooch came from Robin Smith (41), but it was left to lower order man Alec Stewart (30 not out) and Phillip De Freitas (27 not out) to give New Zealand a worthwhile target to chase.
The New Zealand fielding was sloppy with at least six chances spilled.
But on the ground they were sharp and the run outs of Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis helped New Zealand to take the initiative after Gooch had got his team away to a good start.
After the match Gooch said, "We were outbatted, outbowled and out-fielded today."
New Zealand manager, Warren Lees was elated at his team's performance."The Gabba has always been a good ground for us," he said.
