Ian Botham's four-wicket haul and Michael Atherton's resourceful innings of unbeaten 69 steers to England dramatic one-wicket victory over West Indies and take a 1-0 lead in a reserved day used thrilling game of the first ODI.
West Indies scored 173-8 in the allotted 55 overs with top scorer by Viv Richards struck 30 off 45-balls including 4-fours.
Courtney Walsh blasted a unbeaten 29 off 26-balls including 3-fours & a six with strike rate of 111.53, Gordon Greenidge hit 23 off 56-balls contained three-fours.
Curtly Ambrose scored a unbeaten 21 off consuming 59-balls without a boundary, Gus Logie hit 18 off 11-balls including 2-fours and Malcolm Marshall 15.
England best bowler by Ian Botham claimed a 4-wickets for 45-runs in 11-overs including two maidens, Graham Gooch, Richard Illingworth, Phil DeFreitas and Chris Lewis each took one-wickets.
England chased 175-9 in 49.4 overs with top scorer by Michael Atherton scored a unbeaten 69 off consuming 147-balls, Allan Lamb cracked a 18 off 26-balls including 2-fours.
Graeme Hick hit 14 off 49-balls included 3-fours, Phil DeFreitas and Ian Botham each scored 8-runs.
West Indies best bowler by Carl Hooper, Malcolm Marshall, Courtney Walsh, Patrick Patterson each took 2-wickets and one for Curtly Ambrose.

Opener Michael Atherton steered England to a dramatic one-wicket victory in the first one-day cricket international against the West Indies with an unbeaten 69.
Atherton's resourceful innings, his top score in one-day internationals, formed the basis of England's 9-175 with 5.2 of its 55 overs remaining.
England was also helped considerably by an extras total of 43, the highest in a limited overs international.
England, chasing the West Indies' 8-173 off 55 overs, resumed at 4-98 off 27 overs after bad light brought a premature close to Thursday's play.Atherton, 35 not out overnight, and lan Botham, who had scored one, took their fifth wicket partnership to 36 when play resumed reserve day.
Then Botham's comeback triumph turned to bitter disappointment when he pulled his right hamstring while taking a quick single. After lengthy treatment the burly all-rounder, who was England' most successful bowler, resumed batting only to fall lbw for eight to Courtney Walsh off the next ball. He must now be doubtful for the two remaining one-day internationals at Old Trafford today and Lord's on Monday.
Botham, who was back in an England sweater for the first time in almost two years, took four for 45 as the West Indies were restricted to 8-173 in their 55 overs.
