England won the Texaco Trophy when they beat the West Indies by nine runs at Old Trafford here on Saturday - and not even Caribbean skipper Viv Richards could stop them.

Richards hit two sixes and six fours in a superb 78 but when Chris Lewis had him lbw at 208 in the 49th over, the West Indies' challenge could not be maintained.

Gus Logie and Malcolm Marshall did their best to carry on the fight by adding 42 in just over five overs. But a total of 8-261 meant England took a 2-0 series lead with victory by nine runs. The third match is at Lord's on Monday.

England's total of 4-270 was its highest in the 41st international between the two countries, and it was based on a superb opening stand of 156 by Graham Gooch and Mike Atherton, plus an explosive 50-ball 62 from Allan Lamb. Lamb, coming in after Gooch and Atherton had departed in successive overs, dominated a partnership of 102 with Graeme Hick and won the man-of-the-match award.

Gordon Greenidge was unable to open the West Indies innings after straining ligaments in his left knee in the field, limping out at number eight with a runner in a last-ditch bid for victory.

Phil DeFreitas, as at Edgbaston, produced a miserly opening spell. With just eight coming from his first six overs, the West Indies were soon falling behind the clock.

At 3-69 in the 22nd over, the match seemed all over. But Richards found a willing partner in Carl Hooper and the pair added 121 in 25 overs.

Although 88 were needed from the last 10, it was a target which looked within reach while they were together. Lewis then struck a double blow by removing both in successive overs and cool bowling in the closing overs by Pringle and DeFreitas made sure of a victory for England.
