Richie Richardson on his debut as captain inspired West Indies to a stirring one wicket victory over Pakistan with a brave century in the opening match of the Sharjah Cup.

Handicapped by cramp for most of his innings and using a runner, Richardson slammed a masterly, unbeaten 106 as West Indies overhauled Pakistan's modest 215 all out with 15 balls to spare.

He also defied injury after being struck four times by Waqar YouniÅŸ in the bowler's fiery opening spell which brought him two wickets and had Richardson in all sorts of trouble.

Younis should have won the match for Pakistan but he dropped Richardson off his own bowling when he was on 99. Earlier he had shattered Richardson's stumps with a no-ball.

Richardson's gallanı effort earned him the Man of the Match award. He struck 10 fours and faced 141 balls, receiving good support from Ian Bishop for the ninth wicket stand that realised 45 invaluable runs.

Younis finished with figures of four for 48 while skipper Imran Khan, bowling gentle medium pacers, conceded only 38 runs in his full quota of 10 overs and grabbed two wickets.

Earlier the Pakistani batsman had struggled on an easy-paced wicket against the West Indies pacemen and the spin of Carl Hooper.

The only two to bat with any confidence were Rameez Raja and Javed Miandad whose 74 run stand for the fourth wicket was the highest of the match. But otherwise it was a disappointing batting performance from the favourites.

Rameez was never happy during his stay of 102 balls and his 49 contained only four boundaries. But Miandad, showing no ill effects from a back injury, batted fluently for 47 off 78 deliveries.

Wicketkeeper Moin Khan scored a rapid 18 of 16 balls but the middle order and tailenders made little headway.

Curtly Ambrose, Ian Bishop, Patrick Patterson and Hooper each picked up two wickets and generally kept the batsmen quiet.

India face Pakistan tomorrow in the round robin league tournament of seven matches over nine days.
